Dr. Kathryn A. Summers
The "fit" between therapist and client is one of the most important factors in the success of any therapy. As you explore the possibility of pursuing counseling, these are some of the things you should know about me as a professional and as a person.
I enjoy working with adolescents and individual adults facing a range of issues including depression, anxiety/stress, grief and loss, parenting, history of trauma/abuse, personality disorders, spirituality, and sexuality. I am experienced in working with families dealing with separation, divorce, remarriage, and “blended” families. I also specialize in working with clergy through issues of vocation, discernment, and burnout. I am part of the "Give An Hour" network which provides free weekly counseling to veterans of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars and their families.
I work primarily from psychodynamic and relational models of psychotherapy and believe that an authentic connection between counselor and client is central to the healing process. I also employ therapeutic techniques from the latest in brain research (interpersonal neurobiology) and evidence-based practices including EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) . I love all things Enneagram and find it immensely helpful in understanding myself and others. My goal is to provide a safe, nonjudgmental, confidential space in which each client is encouraged and helped toward newness. I approach my clients with warmth, enthusiasm, and a healthy curiosity about the unique challenges faced by each person.
A little about my education, training, and professional activities: I received my B.A. in Psychology and Religion from Duke University, Master of Divinity from Columbia Theological Seminary, and Doctor of Psychology with a focus on Pastoral Psychotherapy from the Graduate Theological Foundation. I have a certificate from the Carolina Institute for Clinical Pastoral Training and am certified by the state of North Carolina as a Fee-Based Practicing Pastoral Counselor. I am an active psychotherapist member of ACPE (formerly the American Association of Pastoral Counselors) and have served in various leadership roles on both a regional and national level.
I know the challenges of being a spouse, parent, step-parent, and lover of dachshunds. In my free time I enjoy reading novels, haunting thrift shops, visiting with friends, and hearing live music in the Triangle.
